U17 GIRLS GO UP 2-0 BUT LOSE SECOND MATCH TO MEXICO Print

Trinidad and Tobago’s Women’s National Under 17 team made a much better start they had in the previous outing but couldn’t hold on to a two goal lead as they closed off their two-match tour of Mexico with a 5-2 defeat to that country’s Under 17 Women’s team on Saturday.

First half goals by Brianna Ryce in the 23rd minute and Khadidra Debesette in the 20th left the visitors ahead 2-0 at half time but the home team hit back in quick succession after the break.

JONES GOES TO WEMBLEY TO PRESENT W/CUP BID Print
The Black Cats' Trinidad and Tobago hitman is heading to London tomorrow, as part of the delegation to submit Sunderland's official 2018 World Cup bid.

"It is such an honour to be delivering the final 2018 bid presentation and I am really looking forward to visiting Wembley Stadium," said Kenwyne.

"It would mean so much to the people in the North East to have World Cup football in their region, and I know that the fans would make any match an incredible occasion."

Months of hard work will reach their culmination as the bid document – complete with more than 50,000 signatures of support – is handed over to the FA at England's national stadium.

The Sunderland delegation – making the trip to London on the Black Cats' official team bus – will be led by chairman Niall Quinn and city council chief executive Dave Smith.

They will be accompanied by members of the bid team including England 2018 Ambassador Kenwyne, city council leader Coun Paul Watson and Black Cats' chief executive Steve Walton.

Niall said: "The presentation represents the culmination of months of hard work and the support of tens of thousands of people from across the North East, who would love to see World Cup football at the Stadium of Light.

"I would like to thank everyone for their truly wonderful support, including the many businesses that have played a key role in supporting the 2018 bid and the sporting institutions that are integral to our proposal and vision of bringing World Cup football to the whole of the region."

Sunderland is one of 16 candidate host cities competing to be included in England's 2018 bid to Fifa - the final list will be announced on December 16, with a decision by Fifa next December.

Coun Paul Watson said: "The sheer enthusiasm and passion that has been shown by everyone – from the bid team, to local business and the people of our region – has been wonderful to see.

"We have really demonstrated to the rest of the country just what this bid means to us and my thanks go out to everyone who has played their part." (Sunderland Echo, Nov 25,2009)
