THOMSON COULD GET TORQUAY START Print

New signing Jake Thomson comes straight into contention for a home debut when Torquay United host Northampton Town at Plainmoor tomorrow (3pm).

Gulls manager Paul Buckle brought the Trinidad and Tobago internation in on a month's loan from Southampton earlier this week, and he must now decide whether to give 20-year-old Thomson a starting spot in the League Two clash against the Cobblers, according to the South Devon Herald Express.

"It's important to bring someone in who can come and make an impact, and the only way I can do that is by playing him," said Buckle.

"We're not bringing anybody in to develop them at this point in time, we're bringing them in to play and certainly Jake is coming here with the intention of playing for us."

Michael Brough is also back training with United following his loan spell at Stevenage Borough, and he too is included in tomorrow's squad — meaning Buckle now has 17 first-team players to choose from, plus youth team midfielder Saul Halpin.

"At this moment in time it looks like Michael is staying here, which is great because that will give us a full quota on the bench," added Buckle, who has called on his team to build on last Saturday's encouraging 0-0 draw at Lincoln City.

"I spoke to the players about how important a clean sheet was, and we got that but couldn't find the net at the other end. We need to put that right against Northampton.

"They have a new man in charge so that's obviously lifted them.

"They're on a good run and scored four goals last week, so it's another difficult game, but one we're capable of winning if we play to our best.

"We're unbeaten in six and we're certainly on the way forward.

"We've got to try and win games now, but I feel that is only around the corner.

"Sixteen attempts on goal away from home (at Lincoln) is very good and shows we're trying to be positive in every game we play." (Oct 30,2009)
