| SEATON'S GOAL GIVES T&T WIN OVER JAMAICA |
|
|
After having a shot pushed off the underside of the crossbar by Jamaican goalkeeper Leigh-Ann Jaggon seven minutes earlier, Seaton used a piece of individual skill to give the Soca Princesses the victory. She took a ball down the right side, cut inside Jamaican defender Lia Blake and took a touch inside the penalty area before deftly looping a right-footed shot just out of the reach of a stretching Jaggon that nicked the crossbar before settling in the back of the net. It was the first goal for T&T in the tournament since Natasha St. Louis scored in the first minute of its opening game against Mexico. Jaggon thwarted Seaton in the 58th when the Trinidad winger hit a 25-meter shot that the goalkeeper had to push upward off the underside of the bar before it bounded out. Jamaica had the better of play in the first half with Natasha St. Louis hitting the left corner of the post and crossbar from 25 meters in the 24th minute. Jamaica returned home with three losses in as many games and without a goal. T&T finiished with a flurry, hitting the post again when Mariah Shade's volley of a rebound hit a sprawled Jaggon and deflected off the goal and out of play. (Jan 26,2010. Sydney Leroux scored a pair of goals in the 37th and 45th while Morgan Malborough (5th) and Kristie Mewis (23rd) gave the Americans a 4-0 half time lead. T&T coach Jamaal Shabaaz admitted that getting a result against the Americans was going to be an uphill battle for T&T again but added that they will go all out for a win against Jamaica. “Looking forward to the game against Jamaica we will use this game as an opportunity to give more exposure to some of the younger players in the squad. It is important that we play hard right down to this last game, “ Shabazz told TTFF Media on Sunday. “Games against Jamaica are always a derby and playing in the 2pm heat makes it even more competitive." Reflecting on the loss to the USA, he added : “Despite the 4-0 loss I am proud that the girls tried to play disciplined worked their socks off and played with tremendous pride. We let in some soft goals but we forced a strong USA team to work hard. "Six of our players in the team are U17 and when you consider that we have our U17's are playing in the World Cup in two years time if we continue to work and teams like the United States and Mexico will meet a different T&T U20 squad. As I said to the girls our time is coming and the gap is closing. " (Jan 25,2010) |
