|
![]() Former National Under 20 goalkeeper Thorne Holder has signed a contract with American major League Soccer club Philadelphia Union after being on trial with the club for the past few weeks. Holder, 24, becomes the latest player from T&T to be contracted by an MLS club. Holder was outstanding with Adelphi University in the USA last season after initially going on scholarship with University of Maryland. Former T&T goalkeeper and TTFF technical director Lincoln Phillips, commenting on Holder’s latest move which was completed on Tuesday, said the former Queen’s Royal College custodian has come through the ranks well after experience some obstacles including a serious head injury. “He had a lot of unfortunate injuries but he always seemed to bounce back. In the beginning of his first year at Adelphi he fractured his skull but came back and had a brilliant season. In his second year he got injured badly again breaking his ankle. This time it was bad, his foot turned around and faced in the opposite direction. He got over that and had a great season last year. Now he is reaping the benefits of hard work and persistence,” Phillips said. “His desire is to play for T&T in this 2014 World Cup campaign.” "We are extremely proud and happy for Thorne," Adelphi coach Carlo Acquista said. "His hard work and dedication to the sport is helping him achieve one of his many goals. I would like to personally thank John Urbom and Matt Metzger for their continuous work with Thorne. We wish him great success in Major League Soccer." Holder played 45 minutes against the University of Central Florida on Sunday as he allowed no goals. "My time at Adelphi was filled with excitement and achievement," Holder said. "Fortunately I was blessed with an encouraging coaching staff that was able to push me more than I could push myself," Holder said. "I Had to have reconstructive surgery on my forehead after my first session in 2008, but recovered in three weeks and helped my team to a nine game win streak, my team never allowed me to give up. Adelphi is a fast growing program with great facilities." Holder is the sixth former Adelphi player to be involved on the field with a MLS club, joining Gary Sullivan (Colorado Rapids) and former MLS all-star and U.S. National Team midfielder Chris Armas (Los Angeles Galaxy, Chicago Fire) as the best known. In related news, T&T winger Kendall Jagdeosingh has signed a new deal with American USL First Division powerhouse Rochester Rhinos for the upcoming season. He previously played with Puerto Rico Islanders. |
