UNDER 20 WOMEN LEAVE MEXICO ON WINNING NOTE Print

Trinidad and Tobagos Under 20 women footballers may have lost their opening two matches to hosts Mexico and USA but they left the tournament on a winning note with a convincing 6-1 victory over Cuba in Group A action at the Estadio Cuauhtemoc. Kennya Cordner and Dernelle Mascal led the way with two goals apiece while Nikeisha Noel and Shanelle Warrick also contributed with a goal each.

Canada and USA finished first in their respective opening round groups at the 2008 CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championship in Puebla, Mexico held over the weekend.

Jollene Filigno scored three times to lead Canada to a 4:0 win over Costa Rica and claim the top spot in Group B on Saturday at Puebla’s Estadio Cuauhtémoc. Both teams had already progressed to the semifinals of the CONCACAF Women’s U-20 Championship.

In another Group B encounter, Shakira Duncan notched four goals for Jamaica in the 6:0 triumph against Nicaragua.

On Sunday, the USA took the first-place honors in Group A after posting a 3:0 win against the hosts, Mexico. Michelle Enyeart, Kelly O'Hara and Madeline Nicole Washington all scored for the Stars & Stripes in the victory.

The USA and Mexico will now face Costa Rica and Canada, respectively, in the semifinals of the 2008 CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championship in Puebla on 25 June .

The two finalists will not only play for the CONCACAF title on 28 June at the Estadio Cuauhtémoc, but will also qualify to the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Chile 2008. Prior to the final, the two losing semifinalists will compete in the third-place match for the last CONCACAF berth to the FIFA event. (concacaf.com, June 23, 2008)
