and the rest of the T&T squad checked in to the Blue Haven Hotel in
Bacolet where they will be based for the remainder of the week leading
up to match day. Following Sunday’s 5-1 win over Tobago United in a training fixture at the Bacolet venue, Latapy scheduled an evening training session on Monday with the full compliment of players in camp. United States-based duo Avery John and Cornell Glen as well as Sunderland striker Kenwyne Jones have all teamed up with the rest of the squad. “We have had a full week and a little more time of preparations in Tobago with the twenty-two players that will be in camp going into Saturday’s match. I’m happy with the response of the players to the training so far. We’ve had a chance to work on different things in relation to the way we would want to contest the upcoming match and from that aspect there were positive signs,” Latapy told TTFF Media. “We’ve worked on getting the players up to a physical level that is conducive to international football and for the remainder of the week there are other areas which we will work on which will get us up to state of readiness for the match.” On Sunday evening T&&T defeated Tobago United 5-1 in a training fixture at the Dwight Yorke Stadium on Sunday evening. Yorke put the national team ahead in the second half while Kerry Baptiste added three more in the second half and Jason Scotland added another. Five members of the T&T team were given playing time with the Tobago club on request of Latapy. Among the players who haven’t been involved in the T&T in recent World Cup qualifiers include Caledonia AIA’s Hayden Tinto and Kerry Baptiste while Scottish-based duo Collin Samuel and Marvin Andrews and John (A) are also back in the mix. Scottish-based winger Collin Samuel, who was a member of the 2006 World Cup squad, looking ahead to Saturday’s encounter, is hopeful that he can add to T&T’s chances of a win. “It’s great to be back in the national team. I’ve been away from some time and with my club in Scotland, things have gone pretty well and I’ve been playing and enjoying my football. On Saturday hopefully we can get it right and bring home the three points. It’s a good opportunity for us to get back into the race for South Africa and there will be no better way of doing it with three points from Saturday’s game against Costa Rica,” the St Johnstone player said. Hyland learned of the fatal shooting of the elder Kwasi Hyland, 25, on his return to the Blue Haven Hotel in Bacolet, Tobago on Sunday following a practice match for T&T against Tobago United, which T&T won 5-1. Yesterday, TTFF media officer Shaun Fuentes confirmed that Hyland has been given time off, prior to T&T's crucial CONCACAF 2010 World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica on Saturday at the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Bacolet. "He's (Hyland) been given time off to return home to Trinidad today to be with his family. The TTFF staff and the national team thought it was fitting given the circumstances. He only found out (about his brother's death) last night (Sunday) after the training match." Fuentes also revealed that Hyland seemed in shock, especially having spoken to his brother shortly before his death. "Last night he spent some time with the boys (after he found out) and he appeared to be a little shocked. He spoke to him on the phone just before it happened, while he was on the bus, and by the time he returned to the hotel he received the news that his brother had been gunned down. So I don't think it sunk in until today." Khaleem will return to Tobago ahead of Saturday's match. "There has been no time given for his return (to the T&T squad), but he will return in sufficient time for the game," said Fuentes.
