WOMEN'S LEAGUE KICKS OFF

The First Division of the Trinidad and Tobago Women's League Football (TTWoLF) kicked off  with a series of well contested matches on the weekend. Matches were played in the North, East and South Zones on Saturday and Sunday with some of best talent in local women's football on show.

In the East, St. Augustine took the win against Arima Giants. Although the first half was evenly played and St. Augustine went ahead in the 10' with a goal from former national player Jennel Kissoon, Arima Giants could not match the fitness and discipline from a mix of experienced and young upcoming talents of St. Augustine Sports Club. (Photo shows Kayla Taylor on the ball during action between St Mary's Central United and Debe All Stars.)

Jennel Kissoon would net again in the 25' and Denisha O'Brien would seal it in the 35'. Arima was able to score in the 85' with a goal from Asha Charles but it was too late to get any momentum for them by this time. Go here for more photos

On Sunday, a young Titans team faced the more seasoned but young Sweaters Touring Team. Although Titans scored in the 2' with a goal from Olivia Jaggernauth, the experience of their opponents was a main factor in getting the victory. Sweaters scored in the 68' and 88' with goals from Annabell Lopes and Afiesha Mohammed respectively

In the South, Pt. Fortin Pioneers visited Ministry of Sports Schoolaz and dominated the young and inexperienced team. Tamara Johnson gave Pioneers the lead in the 38' and Shanice James extended the lead in the 78'.

St. Mary's Central United hosted Debe All Stars on Sunday and it was the visitors that came away with the points. Debe consisted of many of the school's experienced and national players which were not to be matched with the young talents of St. Mary's Central United. Debe was very organized in attack and St. Mary's could not contain the skilful Kayla Taylor and Shaneke Arjoon. Arjoon would score from a corner in the 8' minute while Kayla Taylor would score from a penalty kick in the 78' and Tanya Manganos would seal the deal for Debe in the 88'.

In the North, Step by Step would defeat St. Ann's Rangers soundly by 5 goals with 4 goals from U-17 Women's World Cup stand out Jo-Marie Lewis.  Tamar Watson, Jemilia Mathlin, Ahkeela Mollon (capt) and Jo Marie Lewis just to name a few of the marquee players that have committed to this new club. Albeit Step by Step played with 10 from the 17' after Chelcy Ralph was shown the red for an off the ball incident; Jo-Marie would have her way with the young players and all of her goals came from her individual skill and ability. Lewis scored in the 37', 40', 45' and 83'. While Tamar Watson would get her name on the score sheets after Lewis got fouled. Rangers was able to get a constellation goal in the 80' from Sharain Cummings. Kudos must given to young goalkeeper Tenesha Palmer who made some brilliant saves but constant attacks from Step by Step would eventually wear her down. Some other notable players on Rangers were Leah Pope, Analis Cummings and Asha Jones.

A very exciting start for the WoLF and the First Division, organizers are hoping that the momentum can build to make it a truly memorable season and the beginning of a legacy for Women's Football in Trinidad and Tobago.
